Acupuncture
is one of the varied skills offered by physiotherapists.
The first record of Acupuncture is found in the 4,700 year old Huang Di Nei Jing (Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine) said to be the oldest medical textbook in the world.
Qi (roughly pronounced Chee) is an energy force that runs throughout the body. Qi is composed of two parts, Yin and Yang. Yin and Yang are opposite forces, that when balanced, work together, any upset in the balance will result in disease in humans. Treatment with acupuncture aims to restore health by addressing the causes of imbalance.
The body is a self repairing mechanism and any intervention through the use of acupuncture is aimed at encouraging this self healing ability.
Research evidence shows that acupuncture stimulates the brain to produce natural pain relieving chemicals called endorphins. These assist the body to heal itself and offer pain relief.
